A rudimentary analogy-based model for recognising and representing syntactic constructions

This 45-minute presentation demonstrates how general syntactic patterns may be characterised as collections of analogical relationships between concrete word sequences. I present a method for automatically extracting local syntactic dependencies from linguistic data using this characterisation and I show that this method performs relatively well. I also describe an idea for extending this method so that it can also be used to recognise non-local syntactic dependencies, although I do not yet know how well this idea can be made to work.
